Excessive flavour in lamb meat is undesirable for consumers and can prompt purchase resistance. Volatile indoles responsible for off-flavours accumulate more in the fat of lambs on pasture than on grain and are enhanced when lambs graze alfalfa. Here, we investigated whether barley supplementation of lambs grazing alfalfa influences meat sensory quality. Using three groups of 12 male Romane lambs, we compared three feeding regimes: alfalfa grazing (AG), alfalfa grazing + daily supplementation with barley (29 g/kg live weight0.75, AGS) and stall feeding with concentrate and hay (SF). As some of the compounds involved in meat sensory traits may act as dietary biomarkers, we also investigated potential implications for meat authentication. Although barley represented 38% of the diet in AGS lambs, it did not offer any advantage for animal average daily gain or parasitism level. Animal performance, carcass weight and fatness did not differ between feeding regimes. Dorsal fat firmness tended to be greater in AG than AGS and greater in AGS than SF. Skatole and indole concentrations in perirenal and dorsal fat were lower in SF lambs than in AG and AGS lambs (P<0.01 to P<0.0001), but did not differ between AG and AGS lambs. Yellowness, chroma and hue angle of perirenal fat were lower in SF lambs than in AG and AGS lambs (P<0.001), but did not differ between AG and AGS lambs. Absolute value of the mean integral for both perirenal fat and subcutaneous caudal fat (AVMIPF and AVMISC), quantifying the intensity of light absorption by carotenoids in perirenal and subcutaneous caudal fat, respectively, were lower in SF lambs than in AG and AGS lambs (P<0.0001 for both comparisons), but did not differ between AG and AGS lambs. Meat colour was unaffected by the treatment. We confirm that lambs grazing alfalfa accumulate high levels of volatile indoles in their fat, but we show that barley supplementation to lambs grazing alfalfa is not effective in reducing fat volatile indoles concentration and excessive odour/flavour in the meat. We also confirm that both perirenal fat skatole concentration and AVMIPF are of interest for discriminating lambs that grazed alfalfa from lambs that were stall-fed, and we show that they are not effective for discriminating supplemented from non-supplemented grazing lambs.  相似文献

Hamedan province of Iran is a suitable niche for alfalfa growth but many diseases including alfalfa bacterial wilt, bacterial crown and root rot diseases cause economic crop losses. Bacterial wilt is caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. insidiosus, and bacterial crown and root rot diseases are caused by Pseudomonas viridiflava. In this study, we investigated the pathogenicity of C. michiganensis subsp. insidiosus and P. viridiflava strains collected from the main alfalfa growing areas of Hamedan province. Pathogenicity of the virulent strains was tested on alfalfa and the bacterial strains caused symptoms, and data were collected about stem length, root length, wet weight and dry weight of the infected plantlets. The data about the pathogenicity of C. michiganensis subsp. insidiosus and P. viridiflava on alfalfa were compared with each other and were analysed by SAS software and Dunkan's test. Resulted data showed more pathogenicity of C. michiganensis subsp. insidiosus than P. viridiflava on alfalfa. These data also showed that both of these bacteria produced the most losses on wet weight and dry weight of alfalfa plantlets.  相似文献

为了明确非酶抗氧化物质抗坏血酸(AsA)、还原型谷胱甘肽(GSH)及相关代谢酶抗坏血酸过氧化物酶(APX)、谷胱甘肽还原酶(GR)在紫花苜蓿(Medicago sativa L.)对牛角花齿蓟马Odontothrips loti Haliday为害的抗性中的作用,测定了不同牛角花齿蓟马虫口密度下抗、感蓟马苜蓿无性系R-1、I-1的AsA、GSH含量及APX、GR活性的变化。结果表明:受牛角花齿蓟马为害后,R-1无性系在低虫口密度(1、3头/枝条)下,AsA、GSH含量和GR活性均上升,在高虫口密度(5、7头/枝条)下,AsA含量和GR活性先升高后下降,GSH含量上升后保持稳定;I-1无性系的AsA、GSH含量先升高后下降,GR活性在为害后期呈上升趋势;R-1、I-1无性系的APX活性均先上升后下降,但R-1无性系APX活性的上升速率及下降速率小于I-1无性系。说明AsA、GSH含量及APX、GR活性的升高可能是紫花苜蓿对牛角花齿蓟马诱导抗性的一种表现,但I-1无性系对蓟马为害的应激反应滞后于R-1无性系。在牛角花齿蓟马为害后期,R-1无性系体内的AsA、GSH含量及APX、GR活性仍处于较高水平,也说明了R-1无性系对牛角花齿蓟马为害的抗性较I-1无性系强。  相似文献

Ferric ethylenediamine di-(o-hydroxyphenylacetate) (FeEDDHA) and ferric hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid (FeHEDTA) were evaluated as Fe sources for hydroponic growth of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L., cv. Mesilla), either dependent on N2 fixation or supplied with NO3. The hydroponic medium was maintained at pH 7.5 by addition of CaCO3. Nitrogen-fixing cultures were inoculated with Rhizobium meliloti 102 F51 and grown in medium without added nitrogen. After five to seven weeks of growth under greenhouse conditions, plants were harvested. Nitrogen fixation was measured by the acetylene reduction method.When FeEDDHA was supplied, growth of alfalfa, whether dependent on N2 fixation or supplied with NO3, was severely limited at concentrations typically used in hydroponic medium (10 or 20 M). Maximum yield of NO3-supplied alfalfa was obtained at 100 M while maximum yield of N2-fixing alfalfa was obtained in the range of 33 to 200 M FeEDDHA. Nodule fresh weights and N2 fixation rates increased with FeEDDHA concentration up to 33 M and remained essentially constant up to 200 M. With FeHEDTA, maximum yields of both NO3-grown and N2-fixing alfalfa were obtained at 10 M. Growth of NO3-supplied plants was inhibited at 200 M FeHEDTA while growth of N2-fixing plants was inhibited at 100 M FeHEDTA. The numbers of nodules per plant increased between 3.3 and 10 M FeHEDTA; however, inhibition of nodule formation occurred at a concentration of 33 M or higher. Nodule weights per plant and N2 fixation rates were depressed at 3.3 M as well as at 100 M FeHEDTA. The results suggest that alfalfa dependent on N2 fixation is more sensitive to limited Fe availability than alfalfa supplied with NO3.  相似文献

The electro-ultrafiltration (EUF) method has been used to evaluate the short-term and long-term supplying power of soils for many essential plant nutrients. The objective of this study was to compare the capacity of EUF with other extraction techniques to predict the plant availability of soil K and K fertilizer responsiveness by 10 cuts of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) growing over a 366-day period. Increasingly higher average concentrations of soil K were extracted by EUF at 50 V and 20°C (29 mg kg-1), EUF at 200 V and 20°C (48 mg kg-1), 0.002 M SrCl2 (55 mg kg-1), EUF at 200 V and 80°C (85 mg kg-1), 0.1 M HCl (105 mg kg-1), Mehlich 3 (119 mg kg-1), 1 M NH4OAc (120 mg kg-1) and boiling 1 M HNO3 (601 mg kg-1). The large content of vermiculitic minerals in the silt and clay fractions is responsible for EUF desorbing more K in 55 minutes than NH4OAc in 29 out of 30 soils. The total amount of K desorbed by EUF at 80°C was as effective as Mehlich 3-extractable K in predicting K uptake for the first three cuts and was best among the extracting procedures after boiling 1 M HNO3 in predicting the long-term K supply, the uptake of K from non-exchangeable sources and the relative yield of alfalfa over 10 cuts. The desorption of soil K with EUF provides a better evaluation of the K-supplying power of Quebec soils than the extractants currently used, especially on a long-term basis.Contribution no. 396.  相似文献

Persistence of dormant Ranger and nondormant Moapa alfalfas, both susceptible to Ditylenchus dipsaci, varied with stand age and cutting frequency. Stand reduction increased with cutting frequency. In D. dipsaci-infested soil, stand reductions in Ranger 1, 4, and 5 years old exceeded reductions in stands 2 and 3 years old; persistence was greatest in 2-year-old stands. In Moapa alfalfa, D. dipsaci reduced stands the most in years 2 and 3; whereas persistence was greatest in 1-year-old stands. Harvesting Ranger alfalfa one, two, three, and four times during the growing season reduced 2-year-old stands by 10, 14, 19, and 29% in D. dipsaci-infested soil and by 2, 4, 4, and 7% in uninfested soil, respectively. Comparable reductions in Moapa alfalfa were 13, 16, 18, and 38% in infested soil and 0, 2, 4, and 6% in uninfested soil. Cutting frequency had less effect on persistence of resistant semidormant Lahontan grown in D. dipsaci-infested soil relative to susceptible cultivars. Increasing the number of cuttings per year decreased storage of total nonstructural carbohydrate and adversely affected persistence of alfalfa stands and yields; the greatest negative effects occurred on both resistant and susceptible alfalfa in D. dipsaci-infested soil.  相似文献

盐胁迫下苜蓿叶片中蛋白质的合成受到抑制,而其离体叶绿体中蛋白质合成增强,ABA阻碍了后者的蛋白质合成。NaCl胁迫下,“松江”和“肇东”两品种的根和叶中均无新多肽出现。在盐敏感的“松江”品种离体叶绿体中,NaGl诱导70,65,60和43kD4种多肽产生,ABA诱导60和17kD两种多肽产生;在较抗盐的“肇东”品种离体叶绿体中,NaGl诱导83,80kD和43kD3种多肽产生,但100mmol/L NaCl并不诱导83kD多肽出现,ABA无明显作用。两品种的43kD多肽和肇东品种的80kD多肽都存在于类囊体膜上,而松江品种的60kD多肽则存在于叶绿体间质中。  相似文献

Two sand culture experiments were carried out to identify commercial cultivars of lucerne or alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) which contain elite, Mn-tolerant plants for use in a selection programme to increase the acid-soil tolerance of this perennial legume. Differences in Mn tolerance, both within and between cultivars, were observed when a range of cultivars were exposed to regular waterings with dilute nutrient solution containing 20 or 25 mg Mn L–1. Under these moderately toxic regimes, the winter dormant cultivars Cimmaron and WL 318 were found to contain elite plants that had greater dry matter yields than their mean cultivar yield under non-toxic Mn conditions.Cultivars which contained elite, Mn-tolerant plants could not be identified by phenotypic characteristics such as their height or their toxicity symptom score, nor by their winter dormancy class. Possible reasons for the occurrence of elite plants in these cultivars are discussed. The elite, high yielding Mn-tolerant plants could not be identified from the other plants within their cultivar population by their Mn toxicity symptoms nor by their height.  相似文献
